One way the city is doing this is through SMART (Sustainable Materials + ART!), The Center for ReSource Convservation and community art exhibitions like Bold Doors 2012. Doors are symbolic – the concept of opening doors to new ideas and new opportunities is so engrained in Boulder’s culture and history – and from a waste standpoint, we use and discard so many of them. Interior doors, exterior doors, cabinet doors, refrigerator doors…just start counting the number in your own home. Then ask yourself where they go when a home or room is remodeled or “scraped” for replacement. Fortunately, some are adopted through places like the ReSource Yard and find new homes as doors. But there are thousands of doors discarded every year – some could be reinvented as very special, artistic doors while others could find new life as something totally different. We can’t wait to see the creative ideas and works of art! Nicely done Boulder, Co + SMART + Center for Resource Conservation! more [...]

I have always been intrigued by artists that use alternative “canvases.” It keeps the art world and the artists within it on their toes. Art is supposed to challenge us in several ways. Gwyneth Leech is challenging us to think about what art is, what it is supposed to look like and what we do with a material after we’ve “used” it. To add to the awesomeness of this work, it is in the public view! It’s free to look at and free to ponder about for as long as each person wants. Gwyneth has also been sitting at the window making works of art and adding to the installation, chatting with passersby and encouraging them to create their own works of coffee cup art. I love her and I don’t even know her! Cheers to you Gwyneth and your creative reuse art. Hopefully it encourages others to reuse and re-think what it is they use on a daily basis. image source here. more info here. No related posts.
Her latest work grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. I love the combination of media and message in Keri’s art work. If I were in L.A. I would have certainly attended her latest exhibition at Co-op 28 Gallery. Not only does Keri use re-claimed wood for her canvas, she adds punches of color with trash she collects outside her own residence! Way to pick up litter AND re-use it. Double points for Ms. Rosebraugh. They are exquisitely executed, creepy, and fantastic. I love her message (of course) and the creative way she has found to deliver it. Spend some more time with Keri’s work and such on her website HERE. Related posts: Top Ten Creative Reuse List: Popsicle Sticks Related posts brought to you by Yet Another Related Posts Plugin.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a craft workshop led by a friend of mine. She taught the group how to hand sew what she calls a “Hipster Robot.” Although she provided a super easy to follow pattern and tutorial, my favorite part about the whole workshop was that every single robot was different. Talk about one of a kind creations! There was a pink sweater version with fangs, I turned my heart box into a little pocket, the creativity went wild. My very first stuffed animal. I love him. I still don’t have a name for him. It’ll come to me one of these days. Just wanted to mention GoGo Craft because there is another workshop coming up on the 28th of June. If you want to learn how to turn an old tired t-shirt into fresh and fun necklace, than sign up!
So, I have joined the many folks that own a DROID. Thanks to Hill and Usher for providing the phone for some future community art projects I have planned with my collaborative partner down at Art is Moving! When I opened my box I found a prepaid envelope asking me to recycle my old phone. I was so happily surprised. What an awesome way to catch people while they are in the mind set of changing phones! Not only will Verizon recycle your old phone for you, they created a program called HopeLine that donates to non-profit organizations that focus on domestic violence awareness and prevention. In Verizon’s words: HopeLine® collects wireless phones and accessories from any wireless service provider and refurbishes or recycles them in an environmentally friendly way. Since October 2001 when Verizon Wireless launched its national recycling program, HopeLine has collected more than 7 million phones; properly disposed of nearly 1.6 million phones in an environmentally sound way; refurbished the remaining units, funding more than $7.9 million in cash grants for domestic violence organizations; and distributed more than 90,000 HopeLine phones with the equivalent of more than 300 million minutes of service.
And, you can send wireless phones from any company, they don’t have to be from Verizon. They even have a pre-paid label you can download from their website HERE. You can also bring in your old phones to any Verizon Store.

Thanks for thinking of the environment and social justice all at the same time Verizon!

Thanks to the folks at Earth911.com for all of their Tips and Tricks of the green trade. Seriously from how to recycle batteries to Why some people don’t recycle, they’ve covered it! One of my favorite posts as of late was a post featuring 7 Eco Designers. I love how far the upcycled momentum is traveling. There are some amazing craftspeople out there using random fabrics and other such things to make some really cute functional and fashionable clothes and accessories. It is also an encouraging post as I am stepping into the clothes making realm and am pretty new to the game. I don’t know how to sew anything but a purse, so this should be interesting. So, the next time you are looking for a few fun eco facts or an inspiring Do-It-Yourself post, check out Earth911.com. I am sure you will find something there to like and look at, I always do.
